Ashish Negi, widely known by his moniker “Ukrand, is a prominent youth leader and a vocal advocate for the rights of the people of Uttarakhand. Serving as the President of the Central Youth Wing of the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD), he has emerged as a symbol of regional pride and Pahadi self-respect. His leadership is characterized by a deep-rooted commitment to the state’s cultural identity and the empowerment of its youth.

Key Struggles & Advocacy
Mool-Niwasi Rights: Ashish is a staunch supporter of the 1950-based ‘Mool Niwas’ (Original Inhabitant) law to protect the legal rights of native residents.
Land Protection: He actively advocates for stringent ‘Bhu-Kanoon’ (Land Laws) to prevent the unchecked sale of the state’s precious land to outsiders.
Legal Activism: In March 2025, he demonstrated his commitment to grassroots justice when he was arrested for demanding the unpaid wages of a local Pahadi employee from a hotel owner.
Public Support: His 14-day judicial custody in 2025 sparked widespread protests and hunger strikes across Almora and Ramnagar, showcasing his massive public following.
Vision for 2027
Ashish Negi is strategically preparing the UKD for the 2027 Assembly Elections with a focus on modernizing the regionalist agenda:
- Youth Entrepreneurship: He aims to shift the narrative from mere migration to creating local entrepreneurship opportunities for the youth.
- Gairsain as Capital: He continues the struggle to establish Gairsain as the permanent capital of Uttarakhand to ensure the development of hilly regions.
- Decentralized Governance: His vision includes creating 23 districts to bring administration closer to every remote village.
